However, the actress’s life hasn’t been an easy path to success. With racial tensions brewing in the United States during the 1950s and segregation becomingincreasingly prominent, Phylicia’s mother, the poet and art director Vivian Elizabeth, and her orthodontist dad, Andrew Arthur Allen, opted to emigrate.
The family left their roots in Houston, Texas, behind and eventually settled down in Mexico, where Phylicia spent a large portion of her youth. The actress grew up in Mexico along with her older brother and younger sister, which explains why the siblings are all fluent in Spanish. Phylicia went on to get a solid education before getting into acting.
Phylicia and her husband, Ahmad Rashad, tied the knot in 1985 after his extravagant proposal, and the couple went on to have a daughter together.
The “Soul” star graduated from Howard University, where she later also took up a teaching position. Eventually, she landed her iconic role in “The Cosby Show” and later starred in the films “Steel Magnolias” and “Polly.” She continued to land roles throughout her career, even appearing in an episode of the popular drama “Grey’s Anatomy.”

She switched to coconut ice cream, gluten-free pies, rye bread, and avocado toast. The actress advises eating healthy while still adding flavor to meals.
When it comes to social issues, Phylicia is an open-minded and outspoken individual. She has reflected on many of the injustices in the world, having grown up in an era of extreme intolerance, and provided a few wise words about changing the world. She suggests considering the past carefully and asking whether this is the ideal state of the world.
Phylicia is also in favor of progress in other fields. While she initially wouldn’t have advocated for the spread of technology, she has recently become an avid backer of the luxuries technology affords us. She shared that she enjoys teaching from her home or recording Shakespeare plays for the radio.
