Grey’s Anatomy’s Kelly McCreary Announces She’s Scrubbing Out After 9 Seasons

Another long-time cast member is leaving Grey’s Anatomy following Ellen Pompeo’s departure last month. Kelly McCreary announced her departure from the ABC medical drama after playing Maggie Pierce for nine seasons.

In a statement to E!, the actress said, “After nine seasons, I am saying goodbye to Maggie Pierce and her Grey Sloan family.” Being a part of such a storied television institution as Grey’s Anatomy has been a tremendous honor. I will always be thankful for the opportunity provided by Shonda Rhimes, Krista Vernoff, and ABC, as well as the incredible fans for their fervent support.”

Maggie was the head of cardiothoracic surgery at Grey Sloan during her time on the show. She was the daughter of Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.) and Meredith’s (Pompeo) mother Ellis Grey (Kate Burton).

The 41-year-old continued, “It’s a rare gift to spend nine years exploring a character inside and out while reaching a global audience with impactful stories.” It has managed the cost of me a chance to team up with, gain from, and be motivated by endless splendid craftsmen both before and behind the camera.”

“Playing Maggie Pierce has been one of the true joys of my life,” Kelly said in her conclusion. “I leave with profound gratitude for every step of this journey.” I’m looking forward to the next chapter and what lies ahead.

On Instagram, the actress paid tribute to her time on the show by jokingly talking about everything her character has gone through. She mentioned, among other things, “dozens of delightful scenes from sister houses,” “a few ghostly visits from mothers,” “a bunch of drunken emotional breakdowns,” and “a few awkward dinner parties.”
